Electronic Cigarette
Smoking has become a common trend and an addiction for past few decades. But there are many health issues associated with cigarettes smoking that contain tobacco and now people have started thinking about them seriously. The major reason behind this wave of public awareness is the alarming number of deaths (especially early deaths) that are caused by smoking cigarettes. According to a research, smoking accounts for about 5 million deaths in the world annually including more than four hundred thousand (400,000) deaths in USA and this figure is increasing with every passing day. Smoking can cause coronary heart disease, increases the blood pressure/risk of heart attack and tendency of blood to clot. It affects the stamina decreasing the exercise tolerance.
Knowing all these facts, many smokers want to quit but they are unable to do so as they are so addicted to smoking that they just can't get rid of it. What is the solution for this problem then, some way that they keep on smoking but the cigarettes don't have any ill effects. In simple words something that does not contain tar and nicotine (as they keep you addicted to real cigarettes) but keeps the satisfaction of smoking.
An electronic cigarette also called e-cigarette or vapor cigarette is the product that solves the problem. Electronic cigarette is a battery powered device and a good alternative for smoked tobacco cigarettes. It provides inhaled doses of non-nicotine or nicotine vaporized solution. Although no combustion takes place and no tobacco is present yet the vapor provides a physical sensation and flavor similar to the smoke of tobacco cigarette. In order to keep the sense of smoking of a tobacco cigarette, most of the electronic cigarettes are designed to resemble the shape of them; however, some of them also look more like a ball pen or a screwdriver. Both reusable and disposable e-cigarettes have been developed and are available at markets. Reusable e-cigarettes have replaceable or refillable parts.
Electronic cigarette was first developed in 2003 in China by a pharmacist Hon Lik who worked at a company Golden Dragon Holdings. The company later on changed its name to Ruyan (resemble smoking). electronic cigarette was first introduced in market by this company in late 2005. Usually all electronic cigarettes have same components that are a mouthpiece, atomizer and a charging unit. Mouthpiece or cartridge which is a small disposable piece of plastic holding an absorbent material saturated with some flavored liquid. It is constructed in such a way that the vapor created by the atomizer reaches the user's mouth. When the liquid has been depleted, it can be refilled or replaced by another pre-filled cartridge according to user's choice. Second part is the heating element also called the atomizer which vaporizes the solution so that it can be inhaled. Most of the e-cigarettes contain a rechargeable lithium ion battery which is used to power the heating element.
The health effects of electronic electronic cigarettescigarettes are unknown till now. Studies regarding effects of electronic cigarettes on long-term health are in progress. Manufacturers claim that e-cigarettes are safer as compared to traditional tobacco cigarettes; they do not contain harmful materials produced by combustion of tobacco.
